Early-twentieth-century accounts have parents buying a bùa hộ mệnh at a temple or from a thầy for a sick or vulnerable child. The writers are Taoist priests (đạo sĩ), exorcists and monks; the stated purposes are warding a place (trấn yểm) and driving off harm (trừ tà). Older Vietnamese protective practice, tattooing water-spirit designs, sits behind the paper form. Vietnamese speakers often call every Chinese-model paper talisman a bùa Lỗ Ban.

Nobody home, nothing owed: an inscribed object in the vault's yantra_wattu sense.
