th.wikipedia has the cloth as a recognised protection: King Taksin gave it to his commanders in B.E. 2312, Rama I to soldiers in 2328, teachers to pupils after; small pieces were sewn into shirts, and boxers took it up for morale. en.wikipedia adds the origin story told in the gyms — a strip of a mother's sarong tied on the arm before battle — and the ring rule that the head-ring comes off after the wai khru while the armbands stay on. Ms 6983 knows the word as the generic worn charm: a carved figure held in the mouth serves 'as a prachiat', and the waking chant rouses 'the prachiat cloths and mongkhon, to endure and evade'.
