th.wikipedia calls it paritta thread: the monks hold it while chanting, it circles a house clockwise at a merit-making, wraps a Buddha image, is tied at the wrist, and as the twinned มงคลแฝด crowns bride and groom. The Lao and Isan baci ties it on the right wrist for the khwan, worn at least three days and untied, never cut. Ms 6983 uses it as the boundary of the working space — three turns, or seven layers with yantra hung at the eight directions, the thread spun by a virgin girl — inside which oil is cooked, a kuman made or a cloth inscribed. The thread is the frame around every other recipe in this catalogue.
