Figures of the nats, the spirit-deities venerated in Myanmar alongside Buddhism: the 37 Great Nats headed by Thagyamin (Sakka), Mahagiri the house nat, and Bo Bo Gyi the guardian of each pagoda, kept in shrines at home, in shops and at pagodas. A deva-tier being venerated through the object — worship, not necromancy.

Anawrahta fixed the pantheon at 37; most were humans who died violently. Mahagiri was Maung Tint De, a blacksmith's son of Tagaung, burned alive bound to a champak tree by a suspicious king; his sister died with him and both haunted the tree, which was carried to Mount Popa and carved into their figures. Burmese houses still hang a coconut on a post for him. Bo Bo Gyi, an avatar of Indra in the Shwedagon story, pointed to where the pagoda should rise; Thai devotees call him thep than chai, the deity who grants at once, and offer scarves and paso.

Veneration: fruit, coconut, perfume, a scarf; respect at festivals. Worship, not parenting — nothing raised, nothing fed, nothing closed. The nat's own history (a violent death, a grievance) is the pantheon's, not the object's.
