Lao Tham — to tham, 'the dhamma letters' — is the Lanna script adapted for Lao and reserved for scripture: Pali texts, Jataka, and the bound manuscripts of village temples. The oldest dated Isan example is the 1503 inscription at Wat Phra That Phanom, written under Lan Xang. After the Burmese took Lanna in the sixteenth century, Vientiane and Luang Prabang became the manuscript centres, and the Lao Wikipedia records a 1910 assembly that assigned Tham to religious text and the modern Lao script to the state. Today its use in Laos is limited to long-term monks, so the yantra written in it is as much a survival of literacy as of magic.
