In the Vessantara Jataka Chuchok is an ugly old brahmin beggar with a young wife, Amittada; mocked by the village women, she refuses to fetch water until he finds her servants. He walks to the forest hermitage, asks Vessantara for the children Kanha and Jali, is given them, and drags them off on a cord; at King Sanjaya's court the grandchildren are redeemed for a fortune, and at his first meal as a rich man he eats until he bursts. The thirteen kan of the story are preached every year in the Thet Mahachat, and kan 5 is his. The market keeps one line of it — he asked and was given — and a temple in Ayutthaya now houses what it calls the world's largest Chuchok. Describing the devotion is not endorsing it: the story's own verdict on him is the belly.

Class unassigned: not in the vault's vocabulary. Traders keep him as an asking-figure — venerated with respect and offerings, not fed as a dependent — and this record files him that way ahead of a knower's ruling. Nobody is raised in the figure, so history matters less than with a kuman.
