Legend has two nagas carve the Mekong and the Nan with their bodies; Isan reads the Mekong fireballs as naga breath and Kham Chanot as a naga palace. In Buddhism the naga Mucalinda shields the Buddha from rain, the source of the นาคปรก image. In 2022 the cabinet named the naga a national symbol for cultural and creative-economy ends, and the pendant trade rode the same wave.
