Lao Buddhist sculpture is mostly bronze with gold and silver beside it; the great images were cast in parts and assembled, and the Lao gave the Buddha gestures of their own, calling for rain and lying down to welcome death. The named palladia — the Phra Bang, the sixteenth-century gold Phra Sai now in Nong Khai, the colossal Phra Ong Teu in Vientiane — are the models. The worn amulet as a temple product is recent and follows the Thai industry's formats; after 1975 spirit practice was pressed by the state but stayed woven into Lao Buddhism, and the amulet lives in that weave.
