There is no recipe for a khot and cannot be: it is found, not made. The treatise's preface files คต with fangs, horns and minerals as the self-potent natural objects people carried before anyone inscribed anything. The trade names each by its host — a khot kala grew inside a coconut — and holds it for protection and hardness against blades; those functions are the tradition's claim, not the treatise's, which says only that the thing has power in itself.
