In Cambodia a gatha (គាថា) is a Pali formula chanted, inscribed on amulets and cloth, and tattooed on skin, always in the Khom hand that is reserved for sacred text and held to carry power of its own. The Khmer Wikipedia article on the gatha names amulets, yantra cloth and sak yant as its three carriers. Makers are kru khmer and achar, lay specialists of the yogavacara line that François Bizot documented at Angkor; the same esoteric Theravada that gives Thailand its katha and takrut. Under the Khmer Rouge nearly every temple and library was destroyed and the monkhood fell from tens of thousands to under three thousand, so surviving lineages are thin and much of what is sold as Khmer today was made afterwards.
