A Thai quid is betel leaf, areca nut and red lime, sometimes tobacco; chewed, it leaves a red-brown residue. Disciples kept what a master spat out, dried it, lacquered or wrapped it, and cased it. Thai Wikipedia records the quid as the famous item of Phra Khru Khlai of Wat Chanthawat in Surat Thani, and among the objects of Luang Pu Thong Ayana of Wat Ratchayotha, beside ลูกอม balls and somdet-form powder tablets. The state's 1940 campaign against betel made the habit, and so the supply, rarer. Nothing is inscribed and nothing is consecrated in the usual sense: the object is the monk's own body's trace, which is why the trade prices it above every manufactured category.
