Words of Homage to the Teacher

Siddhikariya — if anyone wishes to learn and practice the various magical na, one must first recite the homage-chant (namaskara); only then will it be efficacious.

- Namo tassa bhagavato arahato samma sambuddhassa (x3). [Instruction: recite "Namo" three times.]

- Vanditva sugatam natham, buddhanca dhammanca sanghanca sadhu; namo buddhaya dibbamantam pavakkhami yathabalam; panca-akkharani jatani namo buddhaya vandati.

- Namassitva isisiddhilokanatham anuttaram, isi ca bandhanam satra aham vandami tam isisiddhivessa.

- Namo namassitva acariyam crupadam, antarayam vinasantu sabbakammam passiddhi me.

- Ma-a-u adikamulam tidevanam mahasatra; u-u a-a ma-ma mantra, u-a-sava-mahamantam; ma-a-u lopakennam ankarasevarajino; tini akkharani jatani namo buddhaya satthuno.

- Na-karo Kakusandho, mo-karo Konagamano, buddha-karo Kassapo, tha-karo Gotamo, ya-karo Ariyametteyyo — panca-buddha namamiham. [Note: this stanza encodes the five Buddhas of the present aeon — Kakusandha, Konagamana, Kassapa, Gotama, and the future Buddha Metteyya — within the five syllables Na-Mo-Phut-Tha-Ya.]

- Onkara bindu natham uppannam, Brahma Sahampati nama adikappe suagato; panca-padumam disva namo buddhaya vandanam.

- Siddhi kiccam, siddhi kammam, siddhi kariya tathagato; siddhi tejo jayo niccam, siddhi labho nirantaram; sabba-kammam passiddhi me, sabba-siddhi bhavantu me.

This chant is for paying homage to the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Sangha, and the sage-ascetics (ruesi); homage to the teachers and masters, the Four [Guardian] Lords, and Thao Sahampati Brahma, who established this scripture for study to be handed down in succession. [The practitioner] asks for a blessing to succeed in the work of study; homage must be paid first, before beginning, and only then will it be efficacious.

Explanation

In studying the art of inscribing all the various na, one is instructed to study according to the Pathamang scripture, which is the first scripture in learning incantations and spells — simply put, this means studying the "primal level" itself. There is a traditional account of its origin: once, in the first aeon, when this earthly plane was still empty and void of all things, Thao Sahampati Brahma cast his divine vision down to survey the surface of the world. At that time he saw the world's surface covered only by water, which was steadily receding and about to become dry land. He beheld four lotus blossoms emerging above the water's surface, each bearing one syllable: Na, Mo, Phut, Tha, Ya. He perceived this as the form of the "Na of the First Aeon" (also sometimes called Na Phinthu/Na Bindu), appearing amid the ripples on the water's surface, as though it were the very root and origin of the four lotuses. The Lord [Brahma] then paid homage to it, and prophesied: "This aeon shall be called the Auspicious Aeon (Bhaddakappa); five Buddhas shall attain enlightenment within it." He then cast down blades of kusa grass, causing the earth to arise, and from that time onward there began to be humans, animals, and all manner of plants. Therefore, before studying the Pathamang scripture, or inscribing any magical na-syllable whatsoever, one must first speak words of homage, calling to mind Thao Sahampati Brahma, the primal cause.

In studying how to inscribe all the various na, we must first understand the inscription of the Na of the First Aeon, or Na Phinthu. Without a thorough understanding of inscribing Na Phinthu, none of the other na can be understood. There is an old saying handed down from antiquity:

"As for this Pathamang Phinthu — whoever masters it need not wait for the rest; [understanding of] Na comes of itself."

This Na Pathamang Phinthu, besides being called Na Pathamakap (Na of the First Aeon), is also known by other names: Na Song Phaendin (Na that Upholds the Earth), Na Tua Ton (the Root/First Na), and Na Pattalot (Na of Continuous Warding), depending on preference. And every type of na that the ancient teachers established is a kind of special script-character — it is not, properly speaking, a yantra. Every na-character must be composed of five essential parts, namely:

1. Phinthu (nikkhit — the circle dot) -> [diagram: a single small hollow circle]

2. Thanda (a fine walking-stick) -> [diagram: the same circle now sitting atop a straight vertical stroke, the stroke ending in a small curved foot/hook at the bottom — like a walking stick]

3. Phetha / Phetcha, "splitting apart" -> [diagram: the circle-topped vertical stroke now with a short horizontal branch-stroke jutting off partway down, showing the line "splitting apart"]

4. Angku (bent into a hook) -> [diagram: the circle-topped vertical stroke now curving at the bottom into an open hook, like a goad (ankusa)]

Every na-character must be built up from these four formula-elements [as named above], though the exact shape of any given na may be twisted and varied.

In inscribing a magical na-character, as already stated, one must include these four essential parts, whatever the particular visual form may be; even if the form is altered or distorted somewhat, it must still be laid down according to these four formula-elements, adapting the proportions to fit the formula.

The formula used to inscribe the four essential parts is called the "Pathamang Formula," namely: The formula for inscribing Phinthu: - Pathamang phinthu kangchatang. The formula for inscribing Thanda: - Thutiyang thanda mawcha. The formula for inscribing Phetha: - Tatiyang pheka kanjewa. Or: tatiyang phetcha kanjewa. The formula for inscribing Angku: - Chatuttang angku samphawang. The formula for inscribing Sira: - Panchamang sira sangchatang na (speak the name of the na being inscribed) karo hoti sampawo.

Some na have an additional incantation-phrase inserted at the moment of inscription, for example: - Pathamang phinthu kangchatang na metta.

- Thutiyang thanda mawcha, mokaruna. - Tatiyang phetha kanjewa, phutprani. - Chatuttang angku samphawang, thayindi. - Panchamang sira sangchatang, ya-endu, na-metta-karo-hoti-sampawo.

In addition, [the tradition] sets out further incantations for consecrating each of Phinthu, Thanda, Phetha (Phetcha), Angku, and Sira individually. That is: once Phinthu is inscribed, it must first be consecrated with the incantation proper to Phinthu before Thanda is inscribed; once Thanda is inscribed, it must first be consecrated with the incantation proper to Thanda before Phetha (Phetcha) is inscribed; once Phetha (Phetcha) is inscribed, it must first be consecrated with the incantation proper to Phetha (Phetcha) before Angku is inscribed; once Angku is inscribed, it must first be consecrated with the incantation proper to Angku before Sira is inscribed; and once Sira is inscribed, it must be consecrated with the incantation proper to Sira — only then is the na-character complete. Thus:

To inscribe Phinthu, say: - Pathamang phinthu kangchatang. Then consecrate with the incantation proper to Phinthu, as follows: - Phinthu ekang sumang phantang, phinthu tho angku sangyatha, phinthu tri thamma wichalantha, eka phinthu wichanaye.

To inscribe Thanda, say: - Thutiyang thanda mawcha. Then consecrate with the incantation proper to Thanda, as follows: - A-thanda ekang sumang phantang, thanda tho angku sangyatha, thanda tri thamma wichalantha, thawe thanda wichanaye.

To inscribe Phetha, say: - Tatiyang phetha (phetcha) kanjewa. Then consecrate with the incantation proper to Phetha, as follows: - Phetha ekang sumang phantang, phetha tho angku sangyatha, phetha tri thamma wichalantha, trini phetha wichanaye.

If inscribing with Phetcha instead, consecrate as follows: - Phetcha ekang sumang phantang, phetcha tho angku sangyatha, phetcha tri thamma wichalantha, trini phetcha wichanaye.

To inscribe Angku, say: - Chatuttang angku samphawang. Then consecrate with the incantation proper to Angku, as follows: - Angku ekang sumang phantang, angku tho angku sangyatha, angku tri thamma wichalantha, chattu angku wichanaye.

To inscribe Sira, say: - Panchamang sira sangchatang. Then consecrate with the incantation proper to Sira, as follows: - Sira ekang sumang phantang, sira tho angku sangyatha, sira tri thamma wichalantha, pancha sira wichanaye.

In inscribing na generally, when it is said "inscribe using the Pathamang formula," one should understand that this refers to the inscribing method described above. For the most part only the Pathamang formula [the five short lines] is given, without mention of the separate consecration-incantations. One should therefore know that this consecration-incantation is to be used everywhere throughout, in order to be complete according to the proper method. However, if working in genuine haste, one may use only the single inscribing formula. When wanting to follow the manual fully and properly, one should incorporate the consecration-incantations as well. For na-types that have an incantation-phrase inserted at the moment of inscription, as mentioned above — for example, "Pathamang phinthu kangchatang na metta" — once Phinthu is inscribed, consecrate it with the incantation proper to Phinthu in the same way, then proceed to "Thutiyang thanda mawcha mokaruna," consecrating with the incantation proper to Thanda first, then inscribe Phetha, Angku, and Sira in turn. Once the na-character is complete, one should name it using the naming-formula, namely:

- Namapang samaso yuttattho yuttattha, of all names; let the teacher intend that this be named Na... (speak the name of the na inscribed) ...na-karo hoti sampawo.

And then close with this incantation: - Abhupatitthanang vuttayogato — whatever example has not yet succeeded, may the venerable teacher bring it to completion by means of this formula.

This formula is used to make the inscribed na arise as a complete and proper na; even if there are some deficiencies or omissions, no harm is done. For example, when inscribing Na Metta, once inscribed one names it thus:

- Namapang samaso yuttattho yuttattha, of all names; let the teacher intend that this be named Na Metta, na-karo hoti sampawo. - Abhupatitthanang vuttayogato — whatever example has not yet succeeded, may the venerable teacher bring it to completion by means of this formula.

Next, pay homage to the inscribed na with this incantation, three times through: - Trinikattawana, na-karang pancha-sampawang.

Having paid homage, recite the incantation for consecrating the na specifically — whichever na it may be. Once inscribed, consecrate with this incantation:

- Nara-narahitang thewang, nara-thewehi puchitang, naranang kamapangkehi, na-mami sukatang chinang.

This incantation is specifically for awakening/empowering the na. After that, consecrate with whichever incantation has been specifically prescribed. Most commonly this "Nara..." verse is used as a reinforcing consecration; where it is said to "consecrate with Nara, etc.," understand that this refers to this very verse as the core text. If a Buddha-figure is also included, the figure should be inscribed using the following formula. Inscribe the upper circle, representing the head, saying:

- Sisa-phutthapa-na-chayate — thus may [it] arise as the sacred head.

If there is a "u" above the head, at the time of inscribing say this formula: - U-karo hoti sampawo — thus may [it] arise as "u."

If a half-moon accompanies it, at the time of inscribing use this formula: - Attha-chantapa-na-chayate — thus may [it] arise as the moon.

Furthermore, some na have accompanying letters and numerals. If no formula is specifically prescribed for what should be inscribed, at the time of inscribing use this formula: - Akkharayantang uppachchati, akkharayantang santang wikringkhare. [For inscribing a letter] - Lekhayantang uppachchati, lekhayantang santang wikringkhare. [For inscribing a numeral]

Or one may use the "-karo" formula for every character, as follows: - ...karo hoti sampawo, thus may [it] arise as..., akkharayantang uppachchati, akkharayantang santang wikringkhare. For example, to inscribe Ma, A, U, one would say:

- Ma-karo hoti sampawo, thus may [it] arise as Ma, akkharayantang uppachchati, akkharayantang santang wikringkhare. - A-karo hoti sampawo, thus may [it] arise as A, akkharayantang uppachchati, akkharayantang santang wikringkhare. - U-karo hoti sampawo, thus may [it] arise as U, akkharayantang uppachchati, akkharayantang santang wikringkhare.

Remember this: for every type of magical na, once inscribed and consecrated, use this formula to "erase" [seal/complete] every na: - Itang saddharupang — as for this form of faith, sichchati, it thus succeeds, iti, in this manner.

- Anupatitthanang vuttayogato — whatever example has not yet succeeded, may the venerable teacher bring it to completion by means of this formula. [Formula of completion]

- Nara-narahitang thewang, nara-thewehi puchitang, naranang kamapangkehi, na-mami sukatang chinang. [This incantation awakens/empowers the na]

- Na-karo pathamang jhanang, mo-karo thutiyang jhanang, phut-karo tatiyang jhanang, tha-karo chatuttang jhanang, ya-karo panchamang jhanang; pancha akkharani jatani namo buddhaya lakkhanang.

- Na-karo Kakusandho, mo-karo Konagamano, phut-karo Kassapo Buddho, tha-karo sisa Kayapungkhawo, ya-karo Ariyametteyyo.

- Na Buddho maha-panyo anuphawena, mo Buddho maha-panyo anuphawena, phut-Buddho maha-panyo anuphawena, tha-Buddho maha-panyo anuphawena, ya-Buddho maha-panyo anuphawena.

Call to mind the Four Buddhas when reciting the homage-incantation. This Na Pathamang Phinthu may also be inscribed as pencil/chalk powder; take that powder, mix it into oil, and rub the oil on the body for very strong invulnerability — or it may be applied to another person with the same oil.

Also, one may inscribe it repeatedly to produce a large quantity of powder, then mix that powder with lacquer resin and mold it into prayer-beads. Inscribe this Na Pathamang Phinthu onto kite-paper to serve as the core, coat the outside with the powder-and-lacquer paste, and form it into a single large bead (or what is called a "sucking bead" / luk om). If one goes into battle carrying this bead in the mouth, weapons will not touch the body at all — one will be safe and invulnerable to all weapons.

Also, inscribe a large quantity of Na Pathamang Phinthu powder. When about to eat, form three balls of plain rice only, dip each in the powder, and eat them — three balls per day. While eating the powder-dipped rice balls, nothing else may be eaten; only plain rice dipped in the powder. After eating this way for a full three months, the bones will turn to copper, granting invulnerability to every kind of weapon, and also bringing about wealth and rank, and warding off harm from both spirits and people.

Also, while traveling, if one encounters an enemy and has nothing with which to fight back, gather a handful of dust from the road, heap it together, write the Na Pathamang Phinthu upon it, then rub that dust on the body — one becomes invulnerable to weapons and may fight the enemy; seize the enemy's own weapon, for it will not be able to cut or stab.

If an enemy is bringing a legal case against you and you wish that case to come to nothing, write the person's name on paper — as many names as there are people, write them all — then inscribe Na Pathamang Phinthu over the name. Use that paper as a candle-wick, with 1 baht-weight of beeswax rolled into a candle; light it as an offering while reciting the na-awakening incantation: "Nara-narahitang thewang, nara-thewehi puchitang, naranang kamapangkehi, na-mami sukatang chinang," seven times, then continue burning it as an offering until the candle is spent — the case will come to nothing. One may do this with up to three candles, but never let it reach four, or it will kill [the target].

This Na Pathamang Phinthu may also be pressed upon the forehead. One may inscribe the na into the crown of the head for invulnerability to every kind of weapon, untouched by the power of spirits or people; pressed upon the forehead, no enemy can do harm at all.

If you wish an enemy to be lured into following you, take a brick or stone weighing more than 1 baht-weight — or one may instead use a live coal, or a broken thorned branch — consecrate it as described above, then recite this incantation: "Ghatusi ghatusi kingkaranang ahang manuparichakkhuhimang tangang tangang, kohassana korothohima, tangang tangang, phantha techana changchanami chanami," recited 9 times; "Ma-a-u u-a-ma," recited 9 times; "Techasunemaphuchanawiwe," recited 9 times. Then set the intention firmly, announcing it to Mother Earth (Phra Thorani) and the tree-spirits of that place. If done with a stone, it should be seen [by the pursuer] as a mountain; if done with a coal or thorned branch, it should be seen as a dense thicket blocking the path. Then pay homage to the Four Buddhas and recite this incantation: "Isawasu." The enemy will be quite unable to follow — he will lose his way and go off in another direction.

If traveling by boat, use a piece of wood caught in a fishing net, or driftwood, prepared the same way as described above, with the same intention-setting — it should be seen as an island in the middle of the water, or as a creature beneath the water. Miraculous power will become manifest before the enemy's eyes. Even this much — inscribing only the Na Phinthu — is already a reliable refuge, possessing manifold virtues without end.

Na Pattalot (Na of Continuous Warding)

- Phutthang pattalot, thammang pattalot, sanghang pattalot. Chant this while blowing [breath] onto the na. Na Pattalot can be used for everything; consecrate 3 or 7 times, blow on it, then slap it onto [the target] — it will work continuously, granting whatever is wished for. If one wishes to withdraw/undo this incantation: "Ehipassiko-marenimama." (Luang Pu Suk)

Na Pattalot [second variant]

Na Khun Phaen Chom Talat (Khun Phaen Admiring the Market)

(printed p.18) These two forms of Na Maha-ut belong to the venerable of Wat Naa Suek Pak Nam. They may be inscribed on a takrut (rolled amulet) or inscribed directly on the crown of the head. They should be inscribed on a Saturday or a Tuesday. When about to inscribe, prepare offerings: 4 candles, one baht in weight each; baisi trays to left and right; a pig's head; white cloth; a face-washing bowl; and 6 baht in money, to pay homage to the teacher (Luang Pho Phring).

Na Changngang (Na of Paralysis / Freezing)

Na Changngang grants escape from and immunity to all weapons -- have no doubt of it, it has been used extensively and proven (Luang Pho Phring).

Na Maha-niyom (Na of Great Popularity / Charisma)

Na Rong (the "Summoning/Calling" Na)

This spell consecrates the Na Rong. When making an offering to it, use seven flowers, seven incense sticks, seven candles, seven grains of puffed rice, and seven areca nuts; a paste made from it may be used for any of all 108 purposes [i.e., every purpose in this text]. Once the Na Rong has been successfully summoned, it is considered exceptionally powerful.

Na Phutthamahaniyom (the Great-Popularity Na)

Na Phutthamahaniyom, for popularity and loving-kindness, [is attributed to] the Supreme Patriarch (Pae) of Wat Suthat. It is inscribed on the forehead and then covered with gold leaf, while reciting this spell: ● "Phuttho, phutthatang, phutthalaphang, mutuchittang piyangmama." Inscribe it 9 times; it is very good. Na Phatrakap (the Bhadrakalpa/Fortunate-Aeon Na)

Na Na Thong (the Golden-Faced Na — third version)

Na Na Thong is meant to be inscribed on the body; it brings loving-kindness and grants excellent invulnerability. Once inscribed, chant this spell: ● "Na is as beautiful as golden light in the left eye, mo is as beautiful as crystal light in the right eye, phut is as beautiful as sunlight on the forehead, tha is as beautiful as conch-shell light at the back [of the head], ya is as beautiful as pearl light at the crown, ma-a-u, unaloma pananachayate." Na Metta (Loving-Kindness Na)

Formula for inscribing the Na "Na metta, mo karuna, phut prani, tha yindi, ya endu, na mo phut thaya" — repeat twice. For this formula, trace the middle Na character, which is shaped like the numeral 8; trace it through three rounds while reciting the formula. "Siri phutta sarammuni siri sitthi phawantume, siri thamma sarammuni siri sitthi phawantume, siri sangha sarammuni siri sitthi phawantume, siri sitthi phawantume, sitthi sitthi phawantume" — repeat twice. This formula is traced around the outer border. If used to change another person's feelings, replace "me" with "te." (Mor He, Sai Kosin lineage)

Na Pat Talot (the "Pass-Through" Na)

Formula for inscribing the Na "Na pathamang phinthu lopoja, na karo hoti sampawo" — may it come into being as Na Pat Talot. Once inscribed, chant this formula over it: "Na thalu pururong, long pai badan, sarapat thi ja saek sai, na chai, mo chai, na pai, mo pai, tit nai tit dai, tang jai prarthana" — contemplate and take it as intended. Na Pathamang (the "First" Na)

Formula for inscribing the Na Before inscribing, first say "sadhu, ukasa" three times. "Pathamang phinthu kang chatang, na metta" (repeat); "tutiyang thandha mewa ja, mo karuna" (repeat); "tatiyang phetcha kanjewa, phut pen thi rak" (repeat); "jatuttang angkusampawang, tha hai hen prajak" (repeat); "panjamang sira sang chatang, ya hai yindi metta, na karo hoti sampawo" — and thus it comes into being as Na Pathamang (repeat). "Unalomma panachayate" — and thus it comes into being as Unaloma Pathamang (repeat). [Recited] when making the unaloma [hair-whorl mark]. "Namanang samaso yutatho yutatha" of the name ........ (repeat) — speak the [subject's] name aloud while inscribing. Once inscribed, chant this formula over it: "Na lasuai, mo lasuai maha lasuai, chai kin chai nguai, ying kin ying long, hen na ku nguai-ngong, phitsawong phitsawat khruan ha, nang tha fang khao, nang fao tam thang, nang yiam na tang, kot ok ramphueng, khamnueng ya non, sawat, sut sawat a-won ron ron thon yu mi dai, rong hai rak ku, akajchahi, piti sonthi" (repeat). Chant this formula over the Na Pathamang according to the power of the day [of the week]. It may be made into a powder mixed into food or drink, or used to powder one's own face. Na Rup Thong (the "Golden Image" Na)

Formula for inscribing the Na "Pathamang phinthu kang chatang, na Kukkusanthang" (repeat); "tutiyang thandha mewa ja, mo Konakhamanang" (repeat); "tatiyang phetcha kanjewa, phut Kassapang" (repeat); "jatuttang angkusampawang, tha Khotamang" (repeat); "panjamang sira sang chatang, ya Ariya Metteyyang, Na Rup Thong karo hoti sampawo" (repeat). [This formula names the five Buddhas: Kakusandha, Konagamana, Kassapa, Gotama, and Ariya Metteyya.] "Unalomma panachayate, ya wikrueng khare" (repeat) — [recited] when making the unaloma. "Phutto hoti sampawo" (repeat) — inscribe "Phut" upon "Pha." Once inscribed, chant this formula over it: "Angkan tio hoti, na hantawa na lum, mo hantawa mo long, phut hantawa phut ngong, tha hantawa tha ngan, ya hantawa ya lalai, phutto iti pi so phakawa, iti choeiya choeiya, iti pi so phakawa, na lum, mo long, phut chong lalai, tha rangap, ya lalai maha lalai, lalai lin, lalai fan, lalai chit, lalai jai, phra phai phat pai thuk tong itthi" (repeat). Na Ut Thawan (the "Sealing the Orifices" Na)

It is directed that one make it into a powder and apply it to one's own body; wherever one goes, one will hold authority over all people, who will fear one utterly.
