The commentarial account is that monks meditating in a forest were frightened away by the tree spirits of the place, came back to the Buddha, and were given this — not a weapon and not a ward, but instructions for goodwill — and sent back to the same forest. *Adaptation—* the ขวัญ startles and wanders; that is its defining property, and the nine wandering-verses on the ตู้ขวัญ shelf are a list of the places it goes. A text whose whole purpose is what to do with a mind that has been frightened is therefore the first thing this cabinet should hold. Note what it does *not* do. It does not tell the frightened to stop being frightened, and it does not remove what frightened them — the spirits are still in the forest and the monks go back to it. It gives them something to hold instead. That is the same shape as อารักษ์: nothing is made smaller, and what changes is which way the being is facing. ## The text Pali first, then the English of the same segment. Chanting is done from the Pali; the English is here so a reader who has none of the language can still tell what is being said. The words themselves are ancient and no one holds them; what an edition could carry is editorial and typographic work. This is the romanised Pali, not a Thai chanting book. ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── COLOPHON · คำท้าย Text กรณียเมตตสูตร · The Discourse on Love — Karaṇīya Mettā Sutta Cabinet ตู้พระไตรปิฎก tu phra traipidok — The three baskets Marking Tradition holds— sha256 ae393615007ef02a17f715db20e39c870fce8125411a8796d7d5ade3a34e2834 Copied at the ho trai of wichaa, https://wichaa.net/hotrai — 2026-08-06 Licence English translation: CC0 1.0 Universal (public domain dedication) — SuttaCentral bilara-data LICENSE.md.
